Early this month, New York Times online carried the story that Starbucks would be closing 600 stores beginning this year. That would mean 12,000 people out of job by then. The reason behind the closure is that Stabucks will try to bring back its lost glory.
This news brings us to this question: Has Starbucks reached its saturation point? Or has competition finally caught up. These days, coffee shops are a dime a dozen. I’ve written before that here in the city where I work, you will see a Starbucks in every corner, every block, in evey building. And I would see these stores not really full most of the day. Good thing, the company that brought Starbucks here have assured us that no Starbucks stores in the Philippines will be closed.
Lesson to be learned:
To bring back the old glory, Starbucks should learn that location location location is not always an effective marketing mantra. They need to look deep into their system and find out what made them tick, and will make them tick in the years ahead. During these competitive days, a differentiating taste, brand, or strategy will give a company the edge.

Young woman serving me my latte had a medium sized ring hanging out of her nose. I am an HR Director and was AMAZED to see this allowed in a position serving the public. Grew up on a farm, we put rings in BULLS noses…
This was GROSS and should NOT be allowed in a “service” position as this…. IF I would have noticed BEFORE being served, I would have LEFT…. I will NOT be served by this young woman again, I WILL LEAVE…. I normally go to this Location 4-5 times per week.
Would LOVE to have starbucks customer relations personnel contact me with WHY they allow this………………..

Almost everyone who works there has a great personality and does an amazing job. I have never seen anyone with nose rings, but would not mind it. I think the problem with work places is that fact that there are people who find that “offensive.” It is a free country and would rather shop at places with people expressing themselves. Tattoos, piercings, hair color, you name it! It is work, but work should be fun! If it’s not fun- who is going to want to serve you coffee?? I have worked from retail to collections to HR director and the only thing that changed was my income. Have fun and live your life instead of worrying about how others live theirs. A nose ring is not going to harm your coffee.

Way to go for bringing this up. We always discussed how coffee houses should have a coffee house “feel” to them. Giving baristas a chance to express themselves artistically is the best way to run Starbucks. Being that this Starbucks is located in San Antonio (a very non-conservative city), we appreciate those of you that allow others to express themselves openly. KUDDOS!!!!!
